Here are some advanced nudging shortcuts that can you help move you quicker in repetitive editing situations. Make a selection and get your nudge on!

Shortcuts used in the video are:
(Note: + and – keys on Keypad)

Command +/- Change end of region.

Option +/- Change beginning of region.

Shift +/- Move selection independent of region.

Shift Command +/- Change end of selection independent of region.

Shift Option +/- Change beginning of selection independent of region.

Open Session With All Plug-ins Inactive!

New in pro tools 8 is the ability to open a session with all the plug-ins inactive! This is great for opening sessions quickly to grab a region or check something, without having to load all the plug-ins. This ALSO works in the import session data window which is AMAZING! If you have a large session the last thing you want to do is have the neverending “de-activating” and “re-activating” plug-ins dialogue come up. This lets you bring in tracks quickly without activating plug-ins, but still maintaining all essential automation etc. What a time saver!

To use this shortcut, in the “open session” window, or the “import session data” window shift+click on the “open” button and the session will open with all plug-ins inactive.

Keyboard focus!

Here’s quick and handy one:

Command – Option – 1 : Moves keyboard focus to “Fast keys” (the edit window)

Command – Option – 2 : Moves keyboard focus to the region bin.

Command – Option – 3 : Moves keyboard focus to Groups.

Pro Tools 8.03 New Features

Pro Tools 8.03 was released recently, and we wanted to do a roundup of some of the cool new features (that are not bug fixes)

- The obvious big news about 8.03 is Mac OS 10.6 and Windows 7 Support, but there are a couple other cool new things Digidesign added.

- Edit/Tool Mode Keyboard Lock : Access this in the options menu or with Option – Shift – T to lock out the ability to switch between different variants of your edit tools. This is very handy for people that use the various keyboard shortcuts to switch edit tools, but find themselves accidentally switching the trim tool to the Time Compression-Expansion tool often. This happens to me almost every day, so this is a welcome addition to the software.

- External drive management relinquished to the OS : You can now unmount drives normally using finder while Pro Tools is running without the workspace. ‘NUFF SAID!

Mid-Week Quick Tip: Fix bad automation!

Pro Tools 8.0.3 Bug Fixes!

Aside from officially adding Snow Leopard support, v8.0.3 has unleashed a fury of over-due bug fixes. After testing a few of them out (because it all seems too good to be true!) here are a few of our favorites!

-Import Session Data Window can be resized!

-Shift-S solo crash has been resolved (not sure if I believe this one… they’ve claimed it was fixed at least once before, and while it did get better, it still crashed on occasion. That being said, I haven’t crashed on 8.0.3 yet when using shift+s)

-Automation now follows edits on extending regions with a fade using the super-tool! Hooray!

-Waveform height is now fixed so all waveforms in the session are at the same zoom level, and all change together.

-When hitting play the cursor no longer jumps back, then “catches up” to the cursor position before playing.

-Bounce to disk, and Bounce to Quicktime settings are now saved! Hooray again!

Check back for more info on some improved features as well as updates on the inevitable new bugs in 8.0.3 as they are discovered!

Rule Your Rulers!

If you liked cleaning your edit window you’ll LOVE ruling your rulers!

Rulers Rule!

Option+Click a ruler name: Clears the ruler clicked.

Control+Option+Command+Click on a ruler name: Clears all rulers except the one you click on (note: does not clear the ruler that goes with your main counter as this cannot be cleared)

Control+Click on a ruler name: Turns the grid view on and off.

Command+Click on a ruler name: Changes your main counter, grid, and nudge to that timebase. (where applicable)

edit: had a few extraneous “commands” in there

Combination Edit Modes

New in Pro Tools 8 is the ability to combine grid mode with all of the other edit modes. These modes function exactly like they normally would, but the selector tool (and the selector portion of the super-tool) function in grid mode. Utilizing these combination edit modes will help streamline your workflow and avoid excessive switching of edit modes.

To enter into combination modes, you can shift click on grid mode when you are in another mode. You can also hit both function keys at the same time (for example F1+F4 for Shuffle-Grid mode) Or if you are in an edit mode and press Shift+F4 you can add grid mode to it.

Add the grid clutch to these edit modes to enhance your workflow even more!

Note: Slip-Grid mode has been broken after 8.0.0 cs3 and is still not working in 8.0.1 cs1
